Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) announced a $25 million strategic investment in Fortem Technologies, a leader in counter-drone systems, as part of a broader push to scale next-generation counter-unmanned aerial system (C-UAS) capabilities amid rising global demand. (Media – Lockheed Martin)

The investment, which represents the initial tranche of Fortem’s Series B funding round, will support expanded production and deeper integration of Fortem’s technology into Lockheed Martin’s Sanctum counter-drone ecosystem.

Scaling Counter-Drone Technology for Modern Threats

The move comes as small, low-cost drones rapidly proliferate across both military and civilian environments, creating new security challenges for:

  • Military operations
  • Critical infrastructure
  • Commercial and urban airspace

Lockheed Martin emphasized that autonomous and swarm-capable drones are evolving faster than traditional defense systems were designed to handle, requiring new, scalable countermeasures.

Fortem’s technology is designed to address this gap through an integrated system that can detect, track, and neutralize hostile drones in real time.

Integrating AI-Powered Airspace Defense

At the core of the partnership is the integration of Fortem’s AI-driven airspace security platform into Lockheed Martin’s broader defense architecture.

Fortem’s system includes:

  • TrueView radar sensors for detection and tracking
  • Command-and-control software for real-time decision-making
  • Autonomous DroneHunter interceptors capable of capturing hostile drones

These components will be embedded into Lockheed’s Sanctum platform to create a fully integrated “kill chain”, enabling rapid identification and response to aerial threats.

Lower-Cost Defense Against High-Volume Threats

One of the key advantages of Fortem’s approach is cost efficiency.

Traditional air defense systems—such as missiles or directed-energy weapons—can be expensive per engagement, particularly when dealing with large volumes of low-cost drones.

This cost dynamic is becoming increasingly important as drone warfare shifts toward high-volume, low-cost attack models.
